Grimsel 2008, day 11 - the weather report

April 25, 2008

For more than two days, the dedicated crew has now been hanging around, waiting for acceptable weather. We've got a few obstacles such as a big bomb drop, a nice quarterpipe and more ready to get ridden as soon as there will be at least one sunbeam. Seems like the weather is fooling around with us: Constantly, bright sunlight will tease us in the near environment, but clouds and fog just won't go away from our particular spot. And then there's this annoying wind, coming heavily and cold from the south one day and from the north the next day. So nature's powerful forces keep us shovelling quarterpipes, tunnels and jumps for all the time just out of boredom, only because there is nothing else to do.

Grimsel 2008, day 9 - another night report

April 23, 2008

Once more there was a good night session today at the looping. After a reshape of the take-off and a landing enlargement, Reto Kestenholz, Gian-Luca Cavigelli and Nils Lauper were pushing eachother to throw backflips and even more tricks through that roll. Soon each of the riders had their tricks stomped in the spotlight and then they headed back for the basecamp to have an after work beer. By the way, we're glad some more guys will be arriving tomorrow, because we are slowly but steady running out of supplies up here...

Grimsel 2008, day 8 - the "day off"-report

April 22, 2008

Yesterday late in the evening, it was the youngsters's time to hit that looping. Colin Frei and Gian-Luca Cavigelli had a few more tries on that tricky obstacle, before the crew went to bed. Today, the weather was just like yesterday: All foggy and snowy. So there wasn't too much going on, everybody tried to entertain themselves by watching movies, gambling poker, playing dice or check out those hundreds of caves and tunnels of the KWO power plants in a guided tour with our host Roland Künzler. We're all hoping for the weather to get better soon, so we can do some more shooting out there in the snow.

Grimsel 2008, day 6 - the day after-report

April 20, 2008

Last night, the guys went out again after a short break to shoot the night session at the playground park line. They did superfast lines in teams of three riders and had to watch out not to run into eachother inside those narrow tunnels. Pi Imhof, Reto Kestenholz and Reto Neiger were killin' the lines with their smooth style as they popped out of the first tunnel, jibbed the snowbox and the roof wallride and finally rushed into the final tunnels with 180ies and 360 layback sildes. Also our skier crew with Nils Lauper and his girlfriend Eveline did a few nice runs. Everybody was really tired when we were done shooting that line at about 2 a.m. Then we got back to the kitchen and had a nice meal in the middle of the night. Thanks to chef Reto Neiger...

Soon a few of the guys were out there again today shaping and riding some more obstacles in our playground: Reto Kestenholz had been thinking about a certain obstacle project for a long time, and now today he had finally found the perfect spot for it. So he went out, shovelled on his own for three hours and simply rode through that looping as though it was the easiest thing in the world.

Grimsel 2008, day 5 - short report

April 19, 2008

After yesterday's mellow evening, still inspired by Gino's songs and Terje's snowboarding movie, we got out late today to finish and test our tunnel line. Many new features will guarantee a funny night session we're heading towards. That's why we only show you a few pic's for now, we'll get dressed warm and drop in to our crazy playground for a saturday night session soon.

Grimsel 2008, day 4 - another report

April 18, 2008

Friday was our day... we took the subway home, and that was solid. Solid riding, and solid building before. Special thanks to Sebi Rohrer, an original lumberjack and the first "human bulldozer" i've ever met! If the weather is playing along, we're gonna ride our underground babe tonight, torches and fire included. Tomorrow the boys are heading further up the mountains, direction Oberaar. Sweet to have your own gondola, and no man's land, looking like little AK, isn't it? The "rat pack" up here amounts about twelve guys all the time, some arriving, others leaving. Guttannen, the last village on the way up here, was out of beer today when Kesti wanted to bring some pesents for the crew... "Sorry sir, some young dudes bought all our beer yesterday, all the beer at once!" Nils's travelbag needed two dedicated men to get lifted up a staircase... So far so good.

Grimsel 2008, day 3 - daily report

April 17, 2008

Another day... and before, another night! Davide and Cyrill were out there till 2 a.m., having an idea that turned out to be enough work for twelve guys all day long! Davide wanted a real tunnel run. And Davide allways gets waht he wants - meaning that we have to shape it... So we've been underground all day, loadin' sixteen tons of snow each!!! What a sick little line this is gonna be, starting with a drop-in-the-hole... of course Davide wanted to take the subway line as the first one, so he got the shot of the day, still wearing his hiking boots. I'm sure you don't want to know about the good food, the feeling to be privileged to be up here, the stoke to lay in your hammock, and you can't get that big grin out of your face... so I won't mention all these memories going trough my head... tomorrow we'll have some good weather again, and so you better check out some action shots mañana!

Stay with us, g.

Grimsel 2008, day 2 - (late) evening report

April 16, 2008

I've just been out in the night. The moon is rising, the world is calm and perfect. There is just the sound of silence... I feel stoked. What a day... Davide got up early, horny like a hedgehog, pushin and shovin. "Los, aber voll!" the boys where ready. Some where riding some fresh, we got some solid lines. The others prepared the "aero session". No shape required. Just pick a nice little lip, give it a proper inrun, and thats it. After some rest and relax we all met at the hit and enjoyed... Davide had to admit, while checking the footage ten minutes ago, that we made it a day, a dedicated day. While I sit here to pass you some stoke, a handful of the guys are making themselves ready to give it a "moonlight shape and rip" session. I let them go, and will check the pics tomorrow in the web just like you.

Grimsel 2008, day 2 - morning report

April 16, 2008

Well, here we go with an exclusive: A morning report live from Grimsel Hospiz. When the boys woke up this morning, they saw the blue sky out at Grimsel. Soon, some lines and drops were spotted. Private cable car transport as well as shredding perfect powder in late April made all the guys smile...check out later for more updates from our Grimsel Base Camp.

Grimsel 2008, day 1

April 15, 2008

This morning, it was the time again to go for another Grimsel adventure. Did you ever start a trip with two feet of fresh and another two to come? It's a good start, I tell you... Today we made our basecamp at the Grimsel Hospiz, at around 2000 metres of altitude. The first glimpse of the area was awesome: Huge windshaped walls and waves, three meters of snow got sculptured to a frozen neverland. Right now the boys are well fed, some pipes of peace changed hands, and now we all dream of tomorrow morning, an early bird, a handfull of dedicated guys and a hole world, empty, clean, unridden...

Gummenalp gap jump, day 5

April 5, 2008

Today in the morning, the dedicated crew was all discouraged when at first yesterday's clouds were still covering the sky. But after the first coffee, it turned into one bright and sunny day pretty soon. Now everybody wanted to be first on the spot. Riders were warming themselves up, photographers were cleaning their lenses and filmers were mounting tripods. Then a pretty good session went down at the gap jump as Reto Kestenholz started it with huge airtime in his backside 720ies and frontside 360ies. Following up were Diego Koch and Colin Frei, well known frontside spin artists, and Gian-Luca Cavigelli as well as Iouri Podladtchikov with their huge backside rodeos and skier Nils Lauper. Unfortunately, after the crew's lunchbreak the sky was all covered up again and it was impossible to continue to shoot. Still each of the riders did a few tricks that will be featured in the movie and/or the trailer, so we are all pretty stoked and ready to celebrate tonight... Meeting point: 10 p.m. at the "Garage" in Meiringen.

Gummenalp gap jump, day 4

April 4, 2008

YES, it works! Today, the final reshapes were done and everybody was really excited about whether our jump will work out or not. But when clouds finally cleared up a little bit around 4 p.m., Reto Kestenholz was the first to hit our big jump with a nice and clean "safe" backside 360. And after a few tryout jumps and slight reshapes, Reto and Cyrill Eidam were killing it with huge frontside spins. Photographer Lozza shot some amazing shots of those two, and the dedicated crew was hanging up there still hoping for some sunlight until 8 p.m. Just before it got all dark, they left and had a funny "dirt ride" down to the village. Everybody was walking home tired but happy, hoping that with some good weather, there will be an amazing session going on on the jump tomorrow.

Gummenalp gap jump, day 3

April 2, 2008

Even worse today than on the first day: Just when the crew got to the spot, big, soft snowflakes started to fall from the sky. It was hardly possible to see the landing when standing on the take-off, so after two hours of finishing the take-off shape, the crew decided to leave again and come back another day, because there would have been no chance to finish the jump in today's fog and snowfall. The dedicated crew is now hoping for the weather to clear up again on friday and saturday to be able to have a good session at Gummenalp. By the way: Thanks to Märkel for today's PistenBully work.

Gummenalp gap jump, day 2

April 1, 2008

Yes, the visibility definitely was better today, and when the guys arrived at the spot, they saw a big gap jump with a smooth landing that only had to be given the final shape. That's what Rolf did, a daring PistenBully artist who wasn't afraid to drop into the almost fourty degrees steep slope with his machine. Thanks to Rolf and Biber for the PistenBully support and to all those who helped to shape the take-off.

"How to build a big, big jump" in three steps

March 31, 2008

There had been terrific quarterpipe sessions at the Gummenalp spot at Meringen-Hasliberg for the last two years, now the dedicated crew wanted to try something new. Today, they started building a big (!) gap jump at that same spot despite one foggy and snowy day. Hoping for some better conditions tomorrow, so it will be possible to eye up and rate the whole thing a bit better than today. Thanks now already for the great support by Bergbahnen Meiringen-Hasliberg and PistenBully driver Fritz Heimann.

Even more airtime

March 29, 2008

Done with shooting the first wutang jump yesterday afternoon, the dedicated crew had nothing better to do than shovelling another, even bigger wutang jump right next to the first one. Today in the morning, there was another airtime record mark going to be set. Roman Marti and Cyrill Eidam were killing the spot, starting things off with easy style double backflips as a warm-up. Then Cyrill even pulled a perfect, huge triple backflip, while Roman did some big spin tricks with as much inverted rotation in them as possible, even in the threesixty spins.

Huge airtime over Meiringen-Hasliberg

March 28, 2008

Once more, the dedicated crew wanted to get the best out of the last two weeks's snowfalls. So today, they went to one of the last Meiringen-Hasliberg spots where there was still one whole big slope with loads of untracked powder. There they decided to build a wutang jump to get as much airtime as possible. No sooner said than done, and after just about two hours of shovelling, there was a launching platform pointing towards the skies. And as Diego Koch had brought down his first try, everybody knew there would obviously be even a lot more airtime than on two days ago's jump. Attempts of double backflips and 1080 spins followed and the riders went so massively huge they almost went out the filmer's and photographers's frames.

Going big

March 26, 2008

Another day hittin' the backcountry jumps at Meiringen-Hasliberg today. Again, there were dumped about 50 cm of fresh snow over the last two days, and once more, the crew went to shoot one of the big jumps near the snake line spot. But never had there been as much airtime as today. Biggest kicker day of the winter so far...

Learn from the old an wise - follow the safety rules!

March 25, 2008

Usually, the dedicated crew shows you what snowboarding can look like when you have been doing it for a long time, with passion and never ending motivation. It took those guys years, let's even say their whole lives to reach this level, so don't try to imitate them if you are just riding a few days a year, because snowboarding can change from pure fun to big pain in seconds - it's basically dangerous!
That's why dedicated rider Reto Kestenholz sacrificed one riding day for safety reasons, offering you a free safety coaching.
Read the written rules carefully and always keep them in mind while snowboarding together, and most importantly take care of your friends!!!

Finally...

March 24, 2008

... the dedicated crew could shoot the big backcountry jump which they had been waiting for a long time. They had to go there and leave again for four times due to wind or weather, before today they could get it all on tape. Luckily, there had been lots of snowfalls again over the last two nights so there was a nice and untracked landing beyond the jump where the guys could stomp their tricks into 50 cm of pow.

Looking for easter eggs in the powder

March 22, 2008

All winter long, there had hardly been any powder falling from the skies, but now there you go: For the easter weekend, we got up to 1 meter fresh at Meiringen-Hasliberg! Davide Tiraboschi and photodude Birri got up very early today to stash some easter eggs in the powder and sent the riders to find them. Nils Lauper flipped down some cliffs to make sure he can have a look everywhere around these rocks and Reto Kestenholz tried to blow all that powder away and uncover these eggs with his sprays.

Once again back at the snake line spot

March 18 & 19, 2008

Two great kicker days in the Meiringen-Hasliberg backcountry again for the crew: On the first day, the foggy conditions were used two shovel and build two new jumps just at the snake line spot. Then, on the second day, the dedicated crew could finally hit a jump they had been waiting for all winter long: Today, the otherwise sketchy landing was covered with perfect powder snow, giving the guys the opportunity to land their tricks smoothly. Unfortunately, it all turned round again later that day: The bad weather came back just when they had finished shovelling another jump, and Reto Kestenholz even broke another snowboard, which must be about the third one this winter. The pictures form the morning look great though...

Snake line

March 15, 2008

The dedicated crew found a cool way to "recycle" a kicker spot they had been shooting one week ago: During one whole day of hard work in the Meiringen-Hasliberg backcountry, they built a super-fast and super-sketchy snake line around the old jump. In between and around some rocks and windlips, the industrious shovelling crew had created banks, bumps and jumps and even let the two lines cross each other. This spot would definitely promise good film and photo footage: Photographers and filmers were happy at the latest when they had shot Diego Koch crossing Reto Kestenholz's line with a stylish nosegrab two meters above Reto's head.

Adelboden old school day

March 14, 2008

What fun it was, back in the old days! Walkmans, jeans, neon colors... On March 2, the guys at Adelboden felt great, dressing and styling the old school way. Unfortunately the dedicated crew had been partying too hard the night before and didn't make it all the way from Meiringen, but Reto Kestenholz was representing dedicated style at it's best. Although he had only found an old board with super small regular stance (not goofy as usual), he pulled tricks such as slob airs, tuck knees and even back flips - anyway the feeling of riding is so different, it doesn't matter which way you are going. After some single hit fotoshooting with - of course - an old school camera, up to 40 well-dressed riders did the final polonaise through the GMP park and then enjoyed their free beers - thanks to the bar crew!

What a great day, usually you wouldn't be riding at all at such slushy conditions, but there's a new challenge using old equipment! Go for it, it will change your mind and style - a good experience for every young new school dude.

Tough luck in weather

March 8 & 9, 2008

At Meiringen-Hasliberg, Davide Tiraboschi, Diego Koch and Roman Marti had spotted one last big spot where there was still untracked powder. Immediately they thought to use it as a landing and started to dig the spot and build one massive take-off. Just when they had finished shovelling, they got all covered up in fog and had to return home. And not much more of luck the next day: The day had started with a perfect, brilliant sunrise and blue skies. But as soon as the crew had arrived at the spot, permanent blasts of heavy wind made it impossible to hit the jump. Again, they had to head home without having done one single jump. We'll be back...

Ridin' the channels just like back in the days

March 7, 2008

Due to "scheisse wetter", today's planned freeride lines shoot had to be postponed. Instead, the whole crew met in the Planplatten/Tschuggi area to ride bowls and channels under the leadership of master channel rider Reto Neiger himself. It was one of those foggy days where there's nothing better to do than to go riding with all of your shred-buddies. That's what we did, and we shurely had a real good time, especially because the Meiringen-Hasliberg channels is where half of the dedicated crew learned to ride back in the days. We all felt like schoolboys again as we rushed through those channels in a group of about ten riders simultaneously. A great day with a big smile on everyone's face!

The big day

March 6, 2008

Over the last three days, the Meiringen-Hasliberg area had been covered with up to 50 centimeters of fresh snow. So Thursday with its forecast clarifications was THE DAY for the crew. The guys got up early and hit the gondolas almost even before the lift staff did. For an easy start, some nice and mellow powder lines were ridden and filmed with the freeriders while the other half of the crew was already preparing two powder jumps. These two jumps had been intended to be done for about one whole month, now instead of a lunch break, Roman Marti was killing it on both of them with a massive double backflip which he stomped on the first try as well as many other big and clean tricks. When the kicker session was over, they all hiked up to the top of Tschuggi to enjoy the sunset and to hit a step-down windlip.

Summertime activities in wintertime, Vol.1: BMX park

February 24, 2008

To bridge over to wednesday's forecast snowfalls, Davide Tiraboschi reminded himself of a spot he had been shooting three years ago and immediately took the crew there: To the funny little BMX bike park near the Grimsel area. After a hard day of shovelling and preparing smooth landings, Gian Simmen, Diego Koch, Gian-Luca Cavigelli and Sebi Rohrer could drop in and show their "BMX skills". To get pictures in the appropriate look, the crew mounted a steel cable where they would hang cinematographers and photographers. And I guess somebody had to carry those 80 kilogramms of steel cable up there, hadn't they?

The Grindelwald night-life

February 20, 2008

After the two hard days of the pipe shoot, nothing could stop the dedicated crew from hitting the night-life in Grindelwald, being a constituent element of every good winter vacation. It was tuesday, and although pretty much nothing was going on in town, the guys went crazy as hell. By the way: Read what they write about us in the states right here.

The dedicated crew on winter vacation

February 19, 2008

The dedicated crew went to spend their "winter vacation" at Grindelwald-First: For two days, riders and filmers defied the blistering heat of the spring sun in the superpipe at Schreckfeld, as old halfpipe-masters Gian Simmen, Pi Imhof, Reto Neiger and Reto Kestenholz as well as youngsters Gian-Luca Cavigelli and Stephan Maurer threw their tricks past the cameras. Tons of filming equipment were brought to the spot, including a 12-meter camera crane with a high-definition camera. Thanks for the support from shaper Sascha and the Firstbahnen company.

Another park shoot at Meiringen-Hasliberg

February 15, 2008

Over the last two days, the dedicated crew finished their shoot at the dedicated freestyle-park.ch at Meiringen-Hasliberg. Cameras were running almost 24 hours a day to get all the action on tape. After a good BBQ for lunch, the riders pushed themselves further and further down into the landing of the big park jump. The crew filmed one last sunset session and is now going for the halfpipe shoot at Grindelwald-First. See you there on Monday and Tuesday.
